Disaster DIY Chat
On May 10, the Grade 5 students at Banbury Heights School had the opportunity to have a Skype conversation with Bryan Baeumler from the TV show Disaster DIY on HGTV. The students have just started a science unit on structures where they will have to complete a series of design challenges. Bryan was able to answer a number of questions and provide some design tips that students will be able to use during the course of this unit. Check out a portion of the chat by clicking on ththis link! Bryan Chat

Science Assignment - Bridge Research
Today you will do some important research to collect information that you can use to build your bridge later this week. Work with your group to follow the steps below!
1. Go to the site http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/bridge/basics.html
- Read through the "Bridge Basics" as a group
- Make notes on the positives an negatives of the beam, truss, arch, and suspension bridge
- Draw some simple sketches to help you remember each bridge
2. Go to the site: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/lab/loads.html
- Make detailed notes on how the weight of structure, weight of load and a eathquake can affect a bridge
- Make a few diagrams to help you remember what you learned
3. Go to the site: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/lab/shapes.html
- Make detailed notes on each of the shapes you can use to crete your bridge
- draw a quick diagram so you can refer to them when you are building your own bridge
4. Google: Cantilever Bridge
- Write five points about the positives of this type of bridge
- draw a quick sketch of what it looks like

Fraction Activities
We have begun to look at fractions in our next math unit. I have put together a collection of interactive websites where students can work with fractions visually and learn how to work with equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and adding and subtracting fractions. I encourage students to play some of these games each week to practice the skills we are learning at school.
Here are some links to some fun fraction activities.

Division Activities
We will be working on division as part of our Number Sense unit. Division is much simpler for students when they are very familiar with their multiplication facts. Please continue to practice these at home on a daily basis.
Here are some links to some fun division activities.
